I have a project at college to design a one off shirt for an exhibition. I had to pick either the 50's 60's or 70's era to collect visual research that would help me produce a pattern and shape for a shirt.
Here is my inspiration:
I looked at punk rock and had already started looking at designing
in the early stages of research!
I then looked at images that could influence my pattern for the shirt
like these word prints. But I didn't end up using it.
I found looking at Vivienne Westwood's early work really helpful
and started playing around with designs with a subtle hint of
fetish.
I also looked at her Punk designs to help inspire my own.
I looked at punk images and patterns and came up with these
designs. I took my inspiration from Vivienne Westwood's
punk designs, punk images which I found a houndstooth print
and Henry Hollands big leaopard prints from which he took
inspiration from 70's punk.
These are the rest of my designs. The last 3 were ones I took from
David Bowie and his guitar. These are more outrageous designs
that would have been complicated to make. However my group
suggested I make this one:
So then I started developing my pattern and creating my toile:
This is my shirt bottom as my shirt is more like a shirt-dress
The first stage of my toile. I haven't yet developed my collar
and button stand pattern so that is my next step.
Also this fabric is really quite horrible so hopefully
my fabric that I choose to use will look better!
I started on my final toile to see how it would work.
The button stand, collar, and cuffs worked well here
and the hem. Everything went well and then I
realized that I wanted to use Leatherette for these
parts instead so I had to do other samples
I found it easy to change these parts of the shirt
and I think the leather really works well with the
colours and my theme.
I developed my design boards so that they were
simple and that the illustrations stood out. So I
took the pattern I developed from my research that I
used on my designs and put it in the corner of the design
boards and wrote the collection name down the side in black glitter to represent Glam Rock.
I needed to start looking into my packaging and my swing tag
so I did research on 70's packaging and promotion
to give me inspiration.
From it, I developed this print for my bag and swing tag:
